Within the month the Philadelphia Traction Company, has ordered through Charles Mayer, 400 of the Cochranereliable electric heaters, manufactured by the ReliableManufacturing Company, 53 State street, Boston, Mass.,with a factory at Everett. The manufacturers experi-mented and investigated many styles of heaters beforeadopting this one, which they say has raised the tem-perature of a car to 55 degrees, when the externaltemperature was 17 degrees, using only four amperes ofcurrent, with the voltage 500. The Philadelphia TractionCompany adopted the heater after thorough tests in itsshops and in service on its cars. The illustrations show the heaters in place, and a viewshowing construction. The heaters can be connected inseries, in multiple, or multiple series. The heater consistsof a metal tube (A) about three feet, six inches long andtwo inches in diameter, closed at both ends with a cap of. RELIABLE ELECTRIC HEATER hard rubber (B). Its sides are perforated. Within isanother tube of metal (C) about an inch in diameter, openat both ends. The inner tube has a coating of asbestosaround which is wound a spiral of wire (D), which, owingto the resistance which it affords to the passage of theelectric current, becomes hot, when traversed by thecurrent. One end of the coil is connected with thetrolley, and the other with the ground. Air passingthrough the innner tube will be heated by contact withthe hot wire, and by means of the perforations in thesides of the outer tube a constant circulation of air willbe maintained between the tubes, which, being heated bythe hot wire, a large volume of warm air will be diffusedthrough the car, while the constant supply of cold airwill prevent the wire from becoming excessively hot. Ithas been found in practice that the tube never becomesso hot but it is possible to bear the hand upon it. Aseries of tubes is secu
