The lupous ulcer may besuperficial, when it appears as a fungous, warty, ulceratedsurface, with prominent nodular granulations, which are oftenscabbed over by the drying of the discharge, and are sometimes,irritable, though seldom disposed to bleed. The ulceration pro-gresses under the scabs, and the affection is liable, at anymoment, to assume the deep, or phagedenic form, which wasknown to the older writers as noli-me-t anger e. Fig. 451. Fig. Thagedaenic lupous ulcer. The phagedenic lupous ulcer is a very painful affection, attendedwith great destruction of tissue, and accompanied with a fetiddischarge. Under its influence, the greater part of the nose maymelt away, as it were, in the course of a few weeks, and it is tobe observed, that when the ulcer has reached the level of therest of the face, it may become at least temporarily affection rarely proves fatal by itself, and cicatrization mayoccur, adding to the deformity caused by the disease, by inducingcontraction and distortion of neighboring parts. The treatmentof the superficial form consists in the administration of Arsenic,Causticum Cicuta, Carbolic acid, Staphysagria, Iodine andMercurius, and in the local use of
