Zinc electron configuration. Illustration of the atomic structure and electron configuration of the element zinc. An atom of this element has 30 electrons (black dots) in four shells around the nucleus. There are two electrons in the first shell (1s orbital), eight electrons filling the second shell (2s and 2p orbitals), and eighteen electrons filling the third shell (3s, 3p and 3d orbitals). Finally, there are two electrons in the fourth shell (4s orbital). The electron configuration is 2,8,18,2. The isotope shown here is zinc-65, with a nucleus of 30 protons (red) and 35 neutrons (blue). All isotopes of an element have the same electronic structure.
