Dugald Stewart's classical stone monument on Calton Hill, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK

The inscription on the monument reads "Dugald Stewart, born November 22 1753, died June 11 1828". Stewart was a Scottish philosopher and student of Thomas Reid's common-sense school philosophy. He studied at the University of Edinburgh and later became professor of mathematics and moral philosophy. His main achievements were in his writing and public speaking. The monument, designed in 1831 by William Playfair, is an open structure held up by Corinthian columns and modelled on the monument built in Athens by the greek Lysicrates in the 4th century BC.
