Winter in Norway with snow on mountains. Blistering cold fjord beneatgh

The Hjørundfjorden in Western Norway is spectacular. The mountains rise directly from 700 meters deep fjords to heights above 1600 meters altitude. The steepness and savageness of the mountains make the beauty. The fjords are deep both from surface to bottom and from the coast line as they zig-zag the landscape deep into the country . Along most of the fjords people have lived for hundreds of year eking out a living from both fjord and soil. The mountains still supply hunting game and where this used to help surviving, it is now a fountain for recreation. Mountaineering is a popular activity, even though only the most devoted climb the highest peaks. Several places - on the north slopes - there is everlasting ice, or glaciers whose bluish colour reminds us of the low temperatures up there.
