Built in Philadelphia, the New Ironsides was a very powerful vessel. It had a wooden hull covered with iron plates four inches in thickness. It had eight ports on each side and carried 16 11-inch Dahlgren guns, two 200-pounder Parrott guns, and four 24-pounder boat howitzers. It first went to sea in August 1862. Monitors was a type of warship used during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Heavily sheathed in iron, their main characteristic was a revolving turret that carried two 11-inch guns.
