Colistin antibiotic, molecular model. This drug belongs to the polymixin family of antibiotics. It is used to treat Gram Negative bacteria, which it kills by disrupting their cell membranes. It is often used as a last line of defence against bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotics and is one of the two drugs that is still effective against bacteria carrying the NDM-1 antibiotic resistance gene.
