The effects of such examples were trulylamentable. An eyewitness of this very entertainment says—Men who had been shy of good liquors before, now wallowed inbeastly delights ; the ladies abandoned their sobriety, and were seento roll about in intoxication, (Harrington.) As to the traits ofthe kings mental tastes that we have not yet mentioned, it wouldbe unpardonable to forget James the author, in James the anythingelse.
