See Trench, Syn. of theNew Testament. (See Crown.) DIAL (dial) (Heb. nfe mah-al-aw, step). The invention of the sun-dial belongs most prob-ably to the Babylonians. Herodotus affirms that the Greeks derived fromthem the pole (supposed to mean the dial-plate),the gnomon and the division of the day into twelveparts (ii:ioo). The first mention in Scripture ofthe hour is made by Daniel, at Babylon (:6). The circumstances connected with the dialof Ahaz (2 Kings xx:n; Is. xxxviii:8), which isperhaps the earliest of which we have any clearmention, entirely concur with the derivation ofgnomonics from the Babylonians. Ahaz hadformed an alliance with Tiglath-pileser, king ofAssyria, (2 Kings xvi:], 9) ; he was a man oftaste and was ready to adopt foreign improve-ments, as appears from his admiration of the altarat Damascus and his introduction of a copy of it. ^ Dial in Hindostan. into Jerusalem (2 Kings xvi: 10). The princes ofBabylon sent unto him to inquire of the wonderthat was done in the land (2 Chron. xxxii:3l).Hence the dial also, which was called after hisname, was probably an importation from conjectures have been formed respect-ing the construction of this instrument. On the whole, the dial of Ahaz seems to havebeen a distinct contrivance rather than any partof a house. It would also seem probable, fromthe circumstances, that it was of such a size, andso placed, that Hezekiah, now convalescent (:2i, 22), but not perfectly recovered, couldwitness the miracle from his chamber or it not have been situate in the middle court, mentioned 2 Kings xx:4? A dial has been dis-covered in Hindosta
