Caption: Ser'xu, Sichuan, China - Aug 2002. A Khampa lady dressed in traditional attire during the Ser'xu horse racing festival in the former Tibatan Kingdom of Kham, now Sichuan in China. Held once every three years, the horse racing festival is the largest and one of the most authentic in Tibet. Wearing stones, amber, turquoise and red coral on the head is a custom left over from the tribal days when, perpetually on guard for maurding parties, women would wear the family's wealth on their heads, ready for a quick getaway should the occassion arise.
