BESNIER A BEAUVAIS Inscriptions: Inscription in cartouche, lower field, center: L'ESCOLE DES MARIS Scene enclosed within elaborate decorative frame of swirling acanthus leaves mixed with garlands of flowers & cartouche with the title of Molière's play in lower center of the field; roguish young lady, hurried by jealous & duped Sganarelle, ridicules him by letting her hand be kissed by her lover behind his back (BRD) picture-frame border with decorative fret band incorporating alternating palmette & shell motifs; acanthus leaves in corners This panel was the third of a series of 4 scenes. Badin states that the series was woven a first time in 1731 & a second time only, in 1733. The other 2 panels in this set are signed J-B Oudry, suggesting that this panel was also designed by Jean-Baptiste Oudry. Badin states that 3 tapestries of the series Comédies de Molière had been in the collection of Rodolphe Kann. They are: L'Ecole des Maris, le Dépit amoureux & le Malade imaginaire. They very likely are the ones in set.
