He was a firm supporter of President Madi-sons administration, and was appointed an Indian commissioner for his Stateand the adjoining territories. While engaged in the duties of his office near FortDecatur, on the east side of the Tallapoosa river, he died, on the 24th of Septem-ber, 1815, at the age of about seventy-five years. There he was buried withthe honors of war, under the direction of thelate General Gaines. No stone, itis said, identifies his grave; but in a cemetery at Nashville, a handsome marblecenotaph has been erected to his memory, by An admirer of Patriotism andMerit unrequited. 832 ISABELLA ISABELLA GRAHAM.
