It is but simple justiceto say that Professor Eaton was, under its dis-tinguished patron and benefactor, the founder ofthis school of the natural sciences; that he was afaithful and successful instructor in these studies, and that he contributed, by his labors in the Insti-tute and by his geological survey of the State ofNew York, more than any other man in our countryto the cultivation of geological science. While thetrustees consider the experiment, as to the mode ofcommunicating knowledge adopted in the Rensse-laer Institute, as a successful one, they are fullypersuaded that much of this success is due to theindustry and enthusiasm of Professor Eaton. Fewmen were ever more devoted to the peculiar duties. Van cler Heydeii Mansion, 1834-41 IfiiiMf^^liliiinHiiHB Building on the Infant School Lot, 1844-62
