Manual of pathological anatomy . accompanying pulmonary phthisis, but are not to be con-founded with those in which there is lardaceous disease also. Fattydegeneration is, however, an accompaniment of several importantmorbid processes, and is itself the outcome of the granular degene-ration just Degeneration,—This disease as it affects the kidney pre-sents certain peculiaritiesimportant to notice. Itoccurs in two tolerablydistinct forms. In thefirst, which is by far thecommoner, the kidney ismuch enlarged, smooth, pale, anaemic, the surfaceand cortical portion mot-tled with translucent andopaque yellowish patches, the substance firm andelastic. The addition ofiodine produces both ageneral yellow colour andan orange or brown tintin small specks scattered, through the cortex, whichare in fact enlarged anddegenerated Malpighian glomeruli, while the smaller arteries aresometimes stained in the same way. In the second form of thedisease the kidney is smaller than the normal, its substance is EiG. Malpighian tufts, and a small artery of thekidney affected with lardaceous degeneration.(After Rindfleisch.) MORBUS BEIGHTII. 679 very generally translucent, as if soaked in wax, and of a yellowislicolour, while the cortex is diminished. Iodine produces the mostmarked change in the pyramids, which, especially the papillae, arestained of a dark brown. The same colour is seen on the surfaceof the pelvis, and sometimes even in the ureters and the mucousmembrane of the bladder. The first form shows the manner inwhich the disease first attacks the kidney, through the small arte-ries and glomeruli; while it is only in cases of long standing thatwe find the pyramids so much affected as in the second form. Thepeculiar distribution of the infiltration in the latter suggests atransference of material from the cortex to the papillae. It is onlyseen in cases of very advanced disease, and the ordinary appear-ance of the disease is that first described. Microscopical
