Its entire length was 1053^miles. The work of construction was begun in 1827, attentionbeing given first to the French Creek feeder and afterward to thecanal proper; but numerous obstacles opposed the progress of thebuilders, and in 1834 only a small portion of the division wasready for navigation. The feeder branch was seriously damagedby high water in 1837 ^^d was not again repaired during the State 288 Internal Improvements ownership. In 1843 the feeder, together with the Shenango andConneaut sections of the division, passed into the control of theErie Canal company, by whom the work was completed in Decem-ber, 1844. The compa
