Shoppers walk past Bakdash, a famous ice-cream parlour which has been open in Al-Hamidiyah Souq in the old city of Damascus since 1885. Despite the ongoing conflict in Syria, life in government-held parts of Damascus still carries on relatively peacefully. Damascus, the capital city of war-torn Syria, is mostly under control by the official Syrian government led by president Bashar al-Assad.
