The Bronson & Weston Lumber Co., ofOttawa, have voluntarily adopted the ten-hour day for their mills without reducingthe wages of their employes. This is a step in the right direction, andit will probably soon be seen that the movewill redound to the benefit of the employeras well as to the welfare of the employed. Men who have reasonable hours of laborcan do more and better work in the shortertime they are engaged than can employeswho are compelled to slave for eleven ortwelve hours a day. The best of the announcement is that theBronson & Weston Co. is one of thestrongest in Canada, and their action willundoubtedly result in other lumber-millmen having to follow suit. Thus employ-ers and employes all over the Dominion willbe benefitted. Moreover, this action on the part of thebig Ottawa firm may have additionalweight in view of the fact that one of thepartners, Mr. Bronson, is a member of theOntario Cabinet.
