Upon and into this silken platform, itfastens its anal claspers, or false legs, as they arecalled. Having now secured a firm hold, it nextproceeds to affix its silk to the twig immediately aboveits true legs in front. The foundation of a minute cableis laid over the thu-d pair; then the cable is drawn outas the larva stretches itself away from the twig; andby a wonderful twist of the .body, it brings up the otherround and underneath, so making a loose loop, the endbeing fixed up on to the twig; this girdle is strengthenedby a number of strands ; the. larva then rests, slung up inits silken girdle, in which itremains for some few days(Fig. 1) ; the shape becomesmore bent, until the skinsplits at the back of thehead, and is gradually castoff toward the tail end; andthe translucent chrysalis isevolved. The place of theclaspers being taken by somecurved hooks, and these holdup the chrysalis at the tail,while the other is slung, andsupported by the delicatesilken girdle. (Fiq 3.)
