Bone density scanner. Composite image of a dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scanner being used to measure a patient's bone mineral density (BMD). Artworks added to the image show the X-rays (not actually visible) and the bones of the pelvis and lower spine that are being measured for their mineral density. This technique compares the results from two X-ray beams of differing energy to enable measurement of the BMD. It is typically used to diagnose and assess the effects of osteoporosis in women.
