ZOOGEOGRAPHICAL COMMENTS In the following brief discussion, the genera and species of both the Anthuridaeand Paranthuridae are dealt with as a unit. The southern African region is defined asbeing from the intertidal to the outer edge of the continental shelf, between the SOUTHERN AFRICAN ANTHURIDEA 197 mouth of the Kunene River on the west coast to Vilanculos in Mozambique onthe east coast. Of the 37 species here deah with, 15 have been recorded from deeper than200 m, while 5 of these range from considerably less than, to well beyond200 m. Of these 15 deepwater species, only Pseudanthura lateralis, originallydescribed from West Africa, has been recorded outside the region underdiscussion. When dealing with species occurring in deep water, little regardinggeographic distribution may be deduced, such deep areas being seldom wellsampled. Certain
