Port-en-Bessin is a municipality in Bessin about 10 km north of the city Bayeux, often just called the "Port" by the locals. The two villages, Port-en-Bessin and Huppain, were amalgamated in 1972. The port, situated in a bay next to the English Channel, has existed since the Roman Period, and the shipyards in this village were used by William The Conqueror to build the fleet he used to invade England in 1066. Port-en-Bessin was liberated by the Allies on D-day in Operation Overlord . The village became a terminal for the PLUTO pipeline supplying the Allied vehicles with fuel from August 1944.
