Paolo Savi (1798-1871), Italian geologist and ornithologist. Paolo Savi, who was born in Pisa, was regarded as the father of Italian geology. He studied the geology of the Apuan Alps and explained the metamorphic origin of the Carrara marble. He also contributed essays on the Miocene strata and fossils of Monte Bamboli and on the iron-ores of Elba. He and his colleague Giuseppe Meneghini (1811-1889) published memoirs on the stratigraphy and geology of Tuscany from 1850 to 1851. Savi also became eminent as an ornithologist when he wrote Ornitologia Toscana from 1827 to 1831, and Ornitologia Italiana from 1873 to 1876. This statue of Savi stands in the Orto botanico di Pisa in Pisa, Italy.
