Recycling computer equipment. Worker using a pair of cutters while dismantling a computer monitor for recycling. Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) contains toxic metals such as lead, cadmium and mercury, that must be disposed of safely. Other metals, such as gold and copper, can be resold at a profit when recovered on a large scale. This waste is at the VALDELEC centre in Poitiers, France. VALDELEC, with four recycling centres around the country, was the largest such company in France in 2003. This centre specialises in television sets, computer equipment, electric meters, household batteries and telephones.
