Tumbleweeds caught on a fence. This annual or biennial plant is common in steppe and prairie regions. It distributes its seeds over a large area using a form of wind dispersal. When mature, the whole shoot system (shown here) snaps off above the root, curls into a ball and is bowled along the ground by the wind, shedding its seeds as it goes.
