HIV resistant prostitute. An East African woman who is resistant to HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), has her blood sampled at Majengo Clinic. Up to 10% of prostitutes from this area are HIV resistant and have no viral antigen in their blood (show no seroconversion), although they have been exposed to the HIV virus. She is part of a group of prostitutes, many HIV-positive, who have been selected for a study into AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). The HIV virus causes AIDS. Since the mechanisms of HIV resistance are unknown, a study of the blood of this and other resistant woman is of great medical importance. Photographed at Pumwani in Nairobi, Kenya.
