St Wystan's Church, Repton, looking ESE at the old course & S bank of the River Trent. In the winter of 873-4 the great Viking army created a D-shaped camp using the river bluff & a deep ditch as defences. The Anglo-Saxon monastery & church, with its mausoleum of the Mercian royal family, was incorporated in the camp's southern defences. The present tower & spire are C15th Perpendicular.
