Man donating blood platelets (blood clotting components) in an apheresis clinic. The blood samples in the vacutainer tubes at lower centre will be used to determine the blood type and test for blood-borne diseases. Apheresis is the process by which blood from the donor is separated into its components by an apheresis machine (behind phlebotomist, left). Platelets and plasma are retained while the rest of the blood is returned to the donor. Photographed at the Crozatier Center in Saint-Antoine Hospital, Paris.
