The entrance of the low-level nuclear waste storage facility on Orchid Island. The low-level nuclear waste is located 45 kilometres off the southeastern coast of Taiwan, Orchid Island (Lanyu) has been the country’s offshore destination for nuclear waste disposal. The low-level nuclear waste storage facility has been operating since 1982 and it received heavy critics from the aboriginals, Tao (or known as Yami people), as the residents did not provide any consent towards the facility’s construction. The indigenous community then received billion (US$ million) compensation in 2019.
