Joining the Continentalarmy as a lieutenant in the Third Virginia regiment, he servedat the battle of White Plains, and was wounded at the battleof Trenton. In subsequent campaigns he was aide-de-campto Lord Stirling with the rank of major, and took part in thebattles of Brandywine and Monmouth.
