Gordon T^ART^ATIVE. EXPERIENCES IN THE CIVIL WAR I WAS born in a white frame-house in Waynesburg [Pennsyl-vania], July 18,1843. Among my earliest recollections are thoseof going to school to my father,1 learning to read in McGuffeysFirst Reader. About the same time my mother2 woke me up onemorning by telling me that my father had joined the Sons of Tem-perance (in which he was quite active); and a little later she told methat he had enlisted for the Mexican War. The company was notaccepted, however, and so the family had no part in a war which wasthen very popular with us, but which history does not speak veryhighly about. The return of the few who went from Waynesburg inother companies is also one of my early recollections. From infancy I was taken to church and Sunday School. At thattime my father was a teacher of a Bible Class for adults, which meton Sunday afternoons, and I can remember going with him andlistening
