Portrait of a young geisha. Geisha literally translates "person of the arts". Geishas are educated women who have been entertaining their mostly male society with dance, music and singing as guests in tea houses since the 17th century. They are also involved as operation at festivities. Visually, the geisha differs from the Kurtisan in details of their clothes, with the photographic staging on the historically correct wardrobe barely assessed. In the fantasy of the traveler of the 19th century, the craftsmanship of the geisha mixes with ideas of sexual availability. (Aya Fujita)
