A typical banner at the 2009 G20 protest outside the Bank of England, which eventually became violent and led one death.

This was a very violent protest and a lot of damage was done, especially to RBS’s branch near the Bank of England. It was at this protest that Ian Tomlinson died after being pushed to the ground by a policeman. It happened in April 2009 when the leaders of the G20 nations were meeting in London. The global financial crisis was still very fresh in the memory. The UK Government had bailed out several banks, including RBS. Bankers were being blamed for the economic problems that were affecting everyone. Everyone at the demo was kettled for eight hours
