Palaquium obovatum stem. Light micrograph of a tangential longitudinal section through the stem (trunk) of a Palaquium obovatum tree, showing the medullary rays (yellow-walled purple circles), full of wood parenchyma cells. In-between the rays are long celled tracheids (red), which are dead but carry water and mineral salts. The section has gone through many hollow long vessels with rings (red walls) showing scalariform (ladder-like) pits, through whose walls water passes laterally. These vessels are made up of files of cylindrical cells (vessel members) with the end walls broken down to form long tubes. The vessels are scattered amongst the wood, (diffuse-porous). Magnification: x13 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
