Julius Caesar. Marble bust of the Ancient Roman emperor Julius Caesar. Caesar was a successful politician and general who seized control and became dictator of the Roman Republic, leading to it becoming an empire following his assassination on 15th March, 44 BC. This bust was found by French archaeologist Luc Long in the River Rhone at Arles, France, in 2007, and is thought to be the only surviving portrait sculpted during his lifetime. It is also thought to be the most true to his likeness that has been found. Photographed at the Departmental Museum of Ancient Arles, France.
