Bronze Buddha inside Todai-ji temple, Nara, Japan

The worlds largest and oldest gilt copper and bronze Buddha statue, The Great Buddha at Todai-ji temple complex, Nara. The monastery-temple Todaiji was founded by Emperor Shomu (724-749) when Nara was the capital of Japan. By the time the Buddha was completed in 751, it had consumed most of Japan's bronze production for several years and left the country almost bankrupt. The Buddha is housed inside the world's largest wooden building, in the huge Daibutsuden (Great Buddha Hall), located within the Todaiji temple complex. Both the Buddha and the hall have been reconstructed numerous times due to earthquakes and fire. The current statue dates from 1692.
