Leper squint, Greensted Church, Essex

Greensted church is the oldest wooden church in Europe, dating to at least the eleventh century. This feature, a leper squint, is probably unique. Persons with leprosy were not able to enter the church, but could observe the mass by kneeling at the north wall and squinting through this hole. The view it gives is quite restricted!
