Australopithecus africanus mandible (lower jaw) from an adolescent male (of about 12 years). A. africanus was a bipedal hominid that lived between and 2 million years ago. Studies undertaken on the teeth of the hominid suggest that it was omnivorous. It ranged throughout much of Africa. This fossil was discovered at Makapansgat, South Africa, in July 1948.
