He died December 27, 1887; hiswife, June 14,. 1897. J. V. E. EUis received hiseducation in the public schools of Somersetcounty and spent his youth on his fathersfarm. He learned the trade of carpenter,taught school for a time, and was variouslyemployed up to 1880, when he came toUniontown, where he was for some years inthe employ of the Singer Sewing ]\IachineCompany. In 1888 he established the bakerywhich he has ever since conducted. Politi-cally Mr. Ellis is a Republican of pronouncedProhibition sentiments. He was from Feb-ruary 1, 1895, to April I, 1896, editor of ThePeoples Tribune, the Prohibition organ ofFayette county, and after an interim of twoyears, during which he had no connectiontherewith, became its editor and was the Republican nominee for registerand recorder in 1884 and was defeated, thecounty being strongly Democratic at that. ^^.^ YbrS^-
