Path leading through Puzzlewood, an attraction in the Forest of Dean, Coleford, Gloucestershire

Puzzlewood is in the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire. It was used by the Romans for iron mining, using the method of shallow trenches to get at the iron ore. It is now a tourist attraction. The confusing layout of the paths can mislead people into seeing six bridges rather than the two that actually exist. Puzzlewood is often said to be one of J. R. R. Tolkien's inspirations for writing The Lord of the Rings. Puzzlewood has 14 acres of weird and spectacular scenery and 1 mile of pathways forming a very unusual maze. It also has an indoor wood maze and a number of farm animals. Puzzlewood has remained unaltered since it was transformed into tranquil woodland walks in the 1800's. It has been open to the public for 50 years. A maze of paths with unique wooden seats and bridges enables the weathered and moss covered rocks to be seen at their best.
