Memorial to Dag Hammarskjold, Secretary General of the UN, who died when his plane crashed as it circled to land at Ndola Airport on the Congo Border.

US president JFK called Hammarskjold "the greatest statesman of our century." The picture shows the copper plaque mounted on a stone memorial in today's Zambia at the plane crash site, from which there were no survivors. In the image the anniversary of Hammarskjold's death had just been marked by an event, which explains the flags in the background. Conspiracy theorist still debate what or who caused the crash. However, locals say it was because the airport approach chart used were inaccurate as it did not show Dola hill.
