AN HITHERTO UNPUBLISHED PAINTING BYAUDUBON. BY R. W. SHUFELDT, It was during the month of Alay, 1895, that the writer hadoccasion to visit the late Mrs. John Woodhouse Audubon, thewidow of a son or John James Audubon, the home of this venerable old lady was at Salem, Washing-ton County, in the State of New York, and during the weekor more of my visit, permission was given me by the eldestdaughter of the family to photograph a number of the oldAudubon paintings, and other objects of interest, with theview of some day giving published descriptions of them forpermanent preservation in literature. At the time mentioned, some thirty or forty negatives weremade by me of various subjects, and this valuable series stillforms a part of my private collection. Among them is an ex-cellent colored drawing of the common European jay (Gar-rnluwilsonbulletin22agas
