M the term lordosis is applied to a curve the convexity of which is directedforward, and that a curve of the spine toward either the left or the rightof the median line of the body is called a scoliosis or lateral curvature. These curves in the normal adult spine arise in this manner: Atbirth the spine is perfectly straight. When the infant begins to situp, the weight of the head and shoulders and the forward traction onthe part of the viscera cause the development of a backward curve orkyphosis, which extends over the wholespine. With the effort of the child to holdup its head the cervical portion of the spinegradually bends forward (lordosis). Thethird curve appears when the child beginsto walk. In order to maintain the uprightposition, the child uses its back and glu-teal muscles. At the same time the pelvisis inclined downward, thus throwing thecenter of gravity of the body farther order to compensate for this the lumbarportion of the spine is bent forward, re-sulting in t
