At one place, where the houseson either hand joined at the first floor and formeda cool archway, we came upon a fruit barrow block-ing the way. Stopping Mercedes we were at oncesurrounded by a crowd of children who sprawledall over the car. Attracted by the noise, the ownerof the stall appeared, and, when the solution tothe situation sank into his mind, leisurely backedthe barrow up a side street leaving just enoughX48 i^^ ^ \. At a pace that would havedisgraced a snail we crawled through the narrowcrowded street, escorted by the running tumblingcollection of children who followed persistently, andendeavoured to climb on to the luggage behind andwrite their names on the highly finished panels of thetonneau. Once clear of the town, we got free of ourescort by the simple process of opening the throttle. That drive to Genoa was like a dream, a mirageof beautiful views : brown rocky headlands coveredwith carpets of flowers, jutting far out into a seaof lapis-lazuli which beats continuously againsttheir hard sides, fringing the coast with and there pretty little cottages nestle snuglyin the midst of the luxurious vegetation, specks ofwhite against a dense background of green.
