The Valkyrie bronze statue in Churchill Park at Groenningen in Copenhagen, Denmark. Female figure in Norse mythology.
The Valkyrie bronze statue in Churchill Park at Grønningen / Groenningen in Copenhagen, Denmark. In Norse mythology a female figure serving the god Odin. They decide who survives a battle and select among the dead who to bring to an afterlife in the Valhalla ruled over by Odin. This life-size bronze statue was created by Norwegian sculptor Stephan Sinding (1846-1922) and installed in Copenhagen in 1910. Moved from a position in the Langelinie Park to this spot in Churchill Park in the 1990s. The horse is depicted in full gallop on a downhill slope. The Valkyrie is a dramatic figure - large compared to the horse, her long hair is swept forward, her cape is open and blown backwards by the wind, her knees press in on the shoulders of the horse and she holds a spear in her right hand.
