In but one instance, that ofthe mouse, was it necessary to apply heat in order to stain the spermatozoa. Measurements were made by the use of both the stage and eye-piece microm-eters, always measuring the entire length, dimensions of head, and length oftail; the latter being markedly altered whenever the staining was imperfect. Itwas thought to be of possible service to have all measurements recorded both inmillimeters and in inches. All measurements and sketches were made with a1-6 objective and 2 eye-piece. In the sketching no attempt was made to preservethe original size of the cells. The total lengths given were obtained by themeasuring of complete cells, recording the greatest and smallest measurementsonly; while the measurements of the heads and tails were often taken after theseparts had separated. Therefore the total length is not always equivalent tothe sum of the lengths of the head and Fig. 1.—Man. Fig. 2.—Dog (Mastiff). The spermatozoa of man (Fig. 1) were found to stain deeply with carbolfuchsin; the heads and tails were equally stained, and appeared more distinctand uniform than did those from any other member of this series. The tail wasseldom found to be coiled or twisted, except where water had been previously 1362 Journal of Applied Microscopy to mm., to mm., to mm., to mm., or to in. or to in. or to in. or to in. added to the spermatic fluid. Measurements showed the spermatozoon of manto be the smallest member of this series. Total length,Length, head,Width, , tail. The spermatozoa of the dog (Fig. 2) presented many features which wouldreadily distinguish them from those of man in the fresh and well prepared speci-men ; but if both were subjected to the action of certain secretions and fl
