It being the first of October before thetank was finished, it was allowed to standover winter, a cover being placed over it toprevent the accumulation of water. In earlyspring, the bottom was partitioned by boardsinto four compartments, one foot in depth,which were filled with a rich mixture of well-rotted manure and good soil. In each com-partment a lily root was set, and afterwardthe earth was covered with a thin layer ofsand. The tank was then carefully filledwith water from the well. But one filling wasnecessary and the water has never beenchanged except by rain and evaporation.
