Title page for 'Osteographia' (1733). The illustration shows anatomists measuring and drawing a human skeleton. 'Osteographia, or the Anatomy of the bones' (London, 1733) was written by English surgeon and anatomist William Cheselden (1688-1752). It was the first full and accurate description of the anatomy of the human skeletal system. Cheselden is named as Surgeon to Her Majesty (Queen Caroline), a Fellow of the Royal Society (elected 1712), surgeon at St Thomas's Hospital, and member of the Royal Academy of Surgery at Paris.
