The mixing and tempering of clay has a decided influenceon its refractive qualities, and good machinery and good furnaces are required to form good fire-brick. Some clays are plastic, that is, they may be moulded with great facility into any shape,which they will retain in drying and baking. This quality is caused by the presence of more orless soluble silex, and hydrated clay ; anhydi-ous silex is not plastic. However valuable this qualityof clay may be to the potter and manufacturer of porcelain, it is of little use to the metallurgist ;all we want is,
