Berlin Altes Museum,Old Museum exterior and facade, 18 Ionic columns topped with eagle sculptures & 2 equestrian statues
Altes Museum (Old Museum) designed by architect Karl Schinkel in the Neoclassical style. It is situated on Museum Island in the river Spree and was designated an UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999, It holds the city's Collection of Classical Antiquities (Antikensammlung). 18 Ionic columns support the portico of the building and are topped with 18 sandstone sculptures of Eagles. Two equestrian statues flank the entrance - "Löwenkämpfer" (Lion Fighter) by Albert Wolff was placed in 1861 and "Kämpfende Amazone" ( Fighting Amazonian Woman) By August Kiss was placed in 1842. The Inscription on the portico reads " Friederich Wilhelm lll founded this museum for the study of all forms of antiquities and liberal arts in 1828'
