Astrocyte glial cells, fluorescence light micrograph. Astrocytes are a type of glial tissue, and provide support and nourishment for nerve cells. Fluorescent markers have been used to highlight proteins in the cell nuclei (blue) and cytoskeleton (red). The protein stained here is GFAP (glial fibrillary acidic protein, red) to reveal the intermediate filaments of the cytoskeleton. Cell nuclei have been stained with DAPI. GFAP mutations and intracellular accumulation are thought to play an important role in rare genetic disorders such as Alexander Disease. This sample is from rat tissue.
